Artist's Comments

So I suck at drawing people. Trying to draw someone you know is always daunting - even a good photograph rarely catches the way you actually see them. So I decided that drawing somebody random should be the way to start, and browsing through the new uploads here on da indiscriminately, I came upon [link] by ~PurpleTango. Apparently a random shot by a 15 year old, but I was inspired. I spent a lot of small snippets of time to finish this in an A7 sketchbook. Graphite -> technical pen -> coloured pencil (progresso woodless set of 12).

You picked a challenging drawing and really nailed it! I think its always harder to draw a face that is looking upward. Also love the way you shaped the hands/fingers.

My only suggestion is that since facial features are a delicate area, the technical pen may have been too bold for it and maybe pencil throughout would have maintained the softness.

Thank you so much! In retrospect, I have to agree with you about the ink. I had no clear concept on how I wanted to draw this one. I started with graphite, with the intention of having this as a graphite drawing. When I had the rough outlines, I thought it would be better if I did it in ink completely, like [link] . Then, when I had the main lines down in ink, and erased the graphite, I felt like it's worth a try to put colour back in.
Yeah. I had totally no idea what I was doing :)

I always think people are incredibly difficult to draw, particularly faces.
You've done so well here; she looks really good and the shading is wonderful. I love the bubbles too; the rainbow colours you've added give them so much depth.

Thank you Zoe! I have to admit, your orchid drawings had a lot to do with getting me to try coloured pencils again. Although I don't think I'm anywhere near where you are with my shading and gradations, I'm reasonably happy with this picture.

:aww: You're welcome!
And thank you for you're kind complements. I'm just so happy to be of help!
